The Best Looks From the Screen Actors Guild Awards

Viewers of the livestream of the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards could be forgiven for having a hard time keeping up with the onslaught of outfits on the red carpet. Unlike the Oscars or the Golden Globes, it is an event in which actors nominate and celebrate one another. So although the show wasn’t televised, the ceremony, which took place Sunday night at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, Los Angeles, attracted many of the most established names in Hollywood as well as some of the most exciting breakthrough talent of the year: Cate Blanchett, Viola Davis, Michelle Williams, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jennifer Coolidge, Patricia Arquette, Sam Elliott, Brendan Fraser, Haley Lu Richardson, Austin Butler, Jenna Ortega, Stephanie Hsu, Will Sharpe, Mark Indelicato, Megan Stalter and Tyler James Williams are just a sample of who showed up.

A night with so much talent brought a veritable rainbow of gowns — and suits — in scorching reds, indelible greens, cheerful yellows and a smattering of every shade of pink. But plenty of staple black, white and silver made an appearance as well. It’s hard to go wrong with a well-cut, glittery gown. Below, some standouts.

The black Schiaparelli couture gown, festooned with a swath of pasta-colored frizz, was both elegant and strange — like her role in “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”

Amid a sea of plain black suits, this high-necked Saint Laurent shirt gave the ginger-haired Mr. Redmayne a jaunty vibe.

In real life, “The Bear” actor likes to keep things cool. Her checkered blue-and-brown Emilia Wickstead dress struck just the right balance of dressed up, but not overdone.

Would Anna Delvey (née Sorokin) have approved of this copper-hued Gucci gown with shells over the breasts? No matter, because we do.

Interviews With the Oscar Nominees

  • Kerry Condon: An ardent animal lover, the supporting actress Oscar nominee for “The Banshees of Inisherin” said that she channeled grief from her dog’s death into her performance.
  • Michelle Yeoh: The “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star, nominated for best actress, said she was “bursting with joy” but “a little sad” that previous Asian actresses hadn’t been recognized.
  • Angela Bassett: The actress nearly missed the announcement because of troubles with her TV. She tuned in just in time to find out that she was nominated for her supporting role in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
  • Austin Butler: In discussing his best actor nomination, the “Elvis” star said that he wished Lisa Marie Presley, who died on Jan. 12, had been able to celebrate the moment with him.

Lustrous but playful, with a shell top: The “Abbott Elementary” star gave a lesson in standing out while fitting right in.

No monotone here! The “Hacks” star mixed his Calvin Klein suit with a vintage purple Thierry Mugler shirt, with the kind of ruffles you’d want to get lost in.

Lingerie dresses can risk feeling too underdressed — but this couture Fendi had enough surface work and textures to keep the eye enthralled.

This simple white Ralph Lauren dress with a few cutouts doesn’t scream out for attention, but it ends up getting it anyway.

If you designed a dress to capture Ms. Richardson’s natural effervescence, it might be this one: covered in bubbly white baubles, by Carolina Herrera.

The fierce advice Ms. Ralph’s stylist, who also happens to be her daughter, gave her — “You’ve got to rise like a phoenix, but younger” — broke through in her gold Tadashi Shoji ensemble.

A little rock, a little goth. It was hard not to want to see Ms. Ortega break out into her viral Wednesday Addams dance, wearing this black Versace.

Ripping off Elizabeth Holmes’s tech uniform, Ms. Seyfried gave off a ’60s go-go dancer vibe with her green-apple Prada.

In this Giorgio Armani Prive gown, a sequin bodice gave way to lace detailing. Lydia Tar would never, but that’s just fine.

That head of hair and signature mustache could make anyone want to go gray.
